How and when to have sex after plastic surgery

Be-fore-play

You’ve had the surgery and upgraded your body. Now you want to take a ride in the new whip, try out the enhancements and see if they enhance any other areas of your life. But when is it safe? We will tell you how and when you can have sex after plastic surgery.

How do you know you’re ready?

There’s no denying that you have made sacrifices for the new body feature(s) you have now. You may have deliberated for months or years before deciding you would have surgery. Then you researched doctors and found one you trust. You physically went in for the nip and tuck/lift and suck/whatever you had done and endured the painful recovery time. Now you’re feeling better, good enough that your mind is onto other, perhaps more pressing matters. But how do you know your body is ready?

You may have heard you need to listen to your body during the healing process and that sentiment is still true. If you’re getting tingles in your nether regions and the cockles of your heart are warm, you might feel like you’re ready. While there is no absolutely definite period to wait, there are some general guidelines based on the procedure you’ve had. If you’ve had more than one procedure, err on the side of caution and delay your gratification. Follow the longer timespan.

Breast augmentation

The bare minimum of time to wait before you bare yourself is two days after breast augmentation, as long as there is no touching involved. This includes breast lifts, reductions and implants. You can get back to regularly scheduled programming after four weeks. Be mindful of sexual position because your new girls might need some extra pillows or support. Also remember to keep those incisions clean while you’re getting down and dirty to avoid infection.

Tummy tuck

If you’ve tucked your tummy and want to put a different kind of weight on it now, wait two weeks before ANY activity. After two weeks, you need to be gentle. Wait 4-6 weeks for your standard bump and grind. You have internal and external incisions that are still healing and require tender lovin until they have healed. The movements and exertion of sex can damage incisions, lengthen or worsen scars or cause blood or lymphatic fluid to collect and pool under the skin (aka hematoma and seroma, respectively.) Again, keep your incisions clean.

BBL

You added some cushion for the pushin’ but when can the pushin’ start? Most surgeons recommend waiting at least a month after a BBL (Brazilian butt lift) for missionary style. Eager beavers can try doggy-style as early as two weeks. As with other surgeries, avoiding sex for a time allows incisions and cannula holes to heal properly. If you’ve had a BBL you are familiar with the BBL pillow. You might even be sitting on it now. Remember why? You can’t put any pressure on your new cheeks for 4-6 weeks.

Liposuction

If you’ve only had liposuction, you may be able to have sex 7-10 days after surgery. Congratulations! This is the shortest timeframe suggested after any plastic surgery. Remember, if you’ve had liposuction AND another procedure, follow the longer guidelines for your safety and healing.

Labiaplasty/vaginoplasty

Think inside the box for these two. Your most delicate skin and tissue have been disrupted, cut and sewn. After the labiaplasty, you can try some gentle action two weeks after surgery if you’re feeling up to it. Just try to keep it to a whisper on your lips. To test the inner workings of the vaginoplasty, give it at least four weeks. But pack and unpack that box like you’re moving the fine China and not red Solo cups.

Facials n jobs (face lifts, rhinoplasty, etc…)

While it may seem your face is far enough away from your… other areas, the important thing to consider here is how sex will elevate your blood pressure. Raising your blood pressure too soon after a facial rejuvenation could lead to swelling in your head or bleeding at the surgical site. Surgeons recommend waiting for at least 3 weeks after facial rejuvenation surgery.

Nose jobs require more time to heal, roughly 6-8 weeks, to allow those delicate bones and cartilage to mend. Having sex within that time could result in nasal trauma. Regardless of when you choose to resume your love life, practice safe sex: use positions in a secure environment free from surfaces that could damage your nose if you whack your face off them.

The last stitch

The general amount of time patients need for healing is around 2-3 months. It’s always wise to ask your surgeon when you are cleared for activity. Your surgeon will know best. Any sex during recovery should always be gentle. Listen to your body and if something is uncomfortable, stop immediately. If you want to “sexpedite” your healing, follow your surgeon’s after-care plan to the letter.

Make smart decisions regarding food, drink and bad habits; eat healthy and nutritious foods, avoid alcohol and smoking and drink at least two liters of water each day. Get plenty of rest throughout your recovery process before pulling any all-nighters. Following these guidelines will help preserve your aesthetic results. Communicating with your doctor, making healthy decisions and listening to your body will enable you to have that cake and eat it too.
